I’d love to put 6 of the new centrax 83x78 bigger motors I have on someone’s sled and see what speeds and efficiency it could hit. In San Francisco. 6 of these motors and I bet with the minimal air resistance we could make record efficiency numbers at high speeds. Also like to see what acceleration we could do. Thanks man for the respect. It was my Genesis board, built in 1989, before the Eagles. It was super crazy and tough to keep it straight in the cross wind, and at 100+ didn't help.

Roger Hickey set yet another damn speed record on his Streetluge!! The last record (this is gravity assist, not motorized/jet/rocket proppelled) was 97+ mph! So, RH stepped UP and did 100 mph !! Wow! At 58 yrs. young, that's Awesome. I'm wondering if that was one of the later Eagle series sleds he was on? The fairing, seat and such looked like it, not that you could see much. Hickey is why I stretluged. I saw him back 1980, and once I got back home to VT, and Dad's workshop, I ditched the two previous solid-wood sleds, and started using laminated wood. By summer of '81, I had three different styles of sled, and two of those still exist, one of which has detatchable footpeg struts.Anyhow, to see someone whose been Luging longer than me, older than me, go out and own yet another Speed Record is Inspiring! Congratulations, Roger; Awesome Riding!!

I was quite dismayed to hear of Biker's unexpected and sudden demise. To me, he was a youngin' up+comer, but, um, that was 19 years ago (?!) in Rhode Island...
I have to say, his 'surf style' starting push was an eye-opener on any short course. Biker could win a race within 30 yds. of the Start, just by that brutally quick paddling start. Of course, it takes skill in steering and braking to finish, and usually, Mr. Sherlock kept it clean, and was always fast.
I was sad to see Dregs fold up shop awhile back, and I'd hoped they would've put out a Luge. Their longboards though were noteworthy enough. The Team Biker put around him was darned good as well. His spirit in competition was always a good one, win or lose (usually winning!). The race scene will be quite different without him around...

A forward; And, this is NOT posted to take away from anything the Rogers did, or have done, in the fields of luge or downhill. It's more along the lines of 'synchronicity', but with the Roger's having a better timepiece/and/or/facilities... I had been, during "the dark times" of DH, making various wood sleds, and by 1988 had 8 very different designs, some of solid wood, plywood, Vertical laminate/plywood, and even using wooden crutches (actually was a great setup on both boards!) to create a rear 'leaf spring' along two rails of the chassis. However, I roomed with 'Old School Dan at Sratton ,in '97, and we decided that my aluminum "C" channel had reached it's limit in seat width. Thus, Dan noted that bike frame chromoly, combined with a ridged seatpan, might be the next step. We focused on Aero, making the seat-pan an inverse wing area, and made sure (this was shotly after Jim Korten's horrific crash using an over-layed, between-the-legs handlebar; Yeah, Just DON'T ever do THAT!) that our hand-holds were 'tucked in'. The result was 3 sleds, all a tad different (thanks to bending the tubes without looking at all three axes' along the tubes; That sucked, btw). Dan's came out best, I think, mine, the worst. I could only get 75 mph from mine, and it ALWAYS wanted to go Left, but right so much. Anyhow, I think these were the first Chromoly Tubed sled made, and unlike those of the Hickey ideal of pushing air Out+Around, were the first to use Ground Effect pressures from the seatpan itself (See, no 'Wings sticking out, just random acts of downforce at speed!). I know my sled exists, still, don't kno about the others... Still, I could see very similar thinking in the Roger's Brothers Sleds, along the lines of the frame their seatpan, made usually of sheet-metal aluminum, brake-pressed to form a shallow tub/seat, was way more rigid due to the extra metal. Our fiberglass seats ha great molding curvature[for better aero, and Butt-fit, too], but relied more heavily on the outer frame to carry some stresses. We also could NOT have made a "suit-case" model with the footpegs optional, unless the suitcase was 4 ft. long already. I add this as a side-note. Lott wasn't the only one carrying on with WOOD, I was also, still use it thank you very much.. I played with the 'C'channel aluminum a bit (made 7 sleds that way, 3 with wider, thicker channel used in ATV ramps, kinked to make seats with foam above). But the use of Bike-frame quality chromoly tube was a great project, and I'm glad to see, 15 years on, it's the standard now. Roger's Bros got it dialed!

I gotta give a Big THANK YOU to Marc, as I was at the Killngton Throwdown, on the hill I first rode in 1979, first Luged in 1980. It was Surreal to see riders just bombing down that hill, which, in the day, scared the livin' crap outa me, and the few friends who'd come along to watch my carnage! I do feel, at the least, that I WAS RIGHT, this IS THE HILL to race on! I know of 'crazier' hills nearby, but this is a Classic.
I hit (along with two or three friends) , 73 mph at our fastest, Luging this, 35 years ago, on boards made from 5/8" oak, Plywood/skateboard deck, and Plywood/Crutches, all, my designs, two of which still survive (that oak, didn't survive the hairpin intact, and without footpegs, was a bear to ride). I believe I was the first to ever streetluge this hill, along with Kevin Burnham, back in 1980. Kevin was still in 8th grade, I was a Sophomore... We got 58 mph, according to my Dad's speedometer, which, considering, was pretty damn fast, then.
With stand-up, I'm amazed that riders just slide 3-4 times, only once hard, and just TRUCK IT on down. I'd learned to footbrake, on my own, and used that, airbraking, and controlled turns to survive this hill. The speed difference wasn't huge, in a straight line, but those corners, well, I would've been at the back of the pack, if I was still upright! I love how it's evolved! It makes me wish I was younger, but it also gives me hope that RACING will still be here!
Ride Fast, Take a Chance, but don't hit anything harder than a Haybale!!

Be at Killington's Bear side on June 6th, and, but for one nasty lefty, go STUPID Fast down the hill!! Beware of that left turn, as it cost two of my boards (wooden, homemade, but, we made what no one else would, then) their footpegs, and gave me a scar that's still here on me 30 years on! Nonetheless, this is a Great Luge HILL, one that gets the blood pumping while being a predictable run. Back in the day, we clocked 73 MPH (on Krypto 68mm and/or and Indy trucks, while on plywood sleds, equip. varied a tad), but this hill always but this hill always gave us HUGE SPEED, with a smooth run-out, and few cars. Be There if you ride fast! Enuff said....

I'm selling an all-metal street luge chassis. It is "homemade" but is not a hack job. I've built several luges and this is an evolved drop-bed style based on accepted designs. It has front and rear bumpers, nerf bars and upholstered pads. It's been through a couple of spinouts and has normal wear, but has never been crashed hard and is straight and true. It's a complete chassis - add your own running gear and go kick ass. (So, I'm a skater not a lawyer, but I feel compelled to add the obvious disclaimer: Street luge is an extreme sport that carries risks including injury or death, being dumped by your spouse or girlfriend, strange looks from your coworkers, jail time, lectures from your boss, and walking around all the time with a speed-induced distracted thousand-yard stare... For sale is a TRS street luge built by Steve Fernando. This is one of the best luges I've ever owned. I'm asking $500 for the luge without wheels or trucks. It comes with a travel bag. The bag has a shoulder and back pack straps. The board weighs a little under 21lbs without hardware. With 3 Randal Comp II's and Big Zigs it weighs close to 28lbs. I'm 5'6" so if your interested but don't think the luge will work you might be able to get it altered. I'm pretty solid on the price. so i used to ride several years ago . i rode a few of the barrets that frank waterhouse put on in the early 2000s and the first return to bonelli (the short course) . but then had to take time to have kids and do the grown up thing . In the process i had to sell my board ( a dreggs ) . but now i want back in. so im looking for a preferably used rogers pegless or full. i read a website that had posts from like 2006 that said that was the last run they did of them that year. plus 900 hundered is not in my budget. also if anyone has a REWsports andy lally pegless that would be cool too. theyr is what i believe is george ortons rail on ebay with the wedge helmet and 6 sets of cherrybombs. but i have to pass on it cuz i think it would be an insult to him to chop the front off and turn it into a pegless. On top of that when i get one i got no one to ride with . the socal scene has pretty much gone straight stand up which is cool and all but i want to get my speed in check laying down before i jump back into standing up. thanx brad

In planning for the 2009 event it was decided that the event would have to be postponed due to issues with the road along with several other issues including the economy.East Hill Road had for years suffered from problems and the community felt it was time to deal with those issues, the work was planned and then began in the Spring/Summer of 2009. Those issues were significant requiring large amounts of work to be done and progress has continued in stages. The construction on East Hill Road is slated to be completed sometime in the Spring/Summer of 2010 leaving the Madison County Gravity Fest Committee no option but postpone the return of Gravity Fest until 2011.Rest assured racers that there is work being done in anticipation of the return of Madison County Gravity Fest for 2011, this event is not ready to call it quits. There was communication about selecting a different road but it would not be the same and the committee decided for it to remain on East Hill Road.This event is not a DrNo Racing event it belongs to the people of Madison County and they ask that you, the racers be supportive as they deal with these community issues. The end result is when the event comes back in 2011 you will be racing on a NEW road with an excellent surface for racing.

It was pointed out by Old 97 that we failed to post any Powered Streetluge Bonneville Slat Flats 2009 results so here they are.We'll we returned from the salt flats with everything intact. Even thou the event was delayed until Thursday afternoon due to rain and the courses where still quite wet we made some good runs.After we learned what we needed to do with Jenna's motor she was able to record may 100+mph runs including three 114+mph runs and let me tell you she did some incredible riding to accomplish what she did. On several runs her starts began with her sliding the whole Powered Streetluge sideways due to the wet surface and traction issues.My first pass was on a very wet course, so wet that after the 1 mile mark I could no longer read the GPS due to salt on my shield. My first run broke the 150mph mark by running a average of 150.3mph throught the 1/4 mile speed trap. On my second pass I found that 4th gear was no longer working so my second and final pass was 116mph. We made several attempts to get 4th gear back but did not have the facilities to tear down the motor on the salt flats. Have a great day,Rolandhttp://www.PoweredStreetluge.com
